Therefore, two emotions were provided in this game. He was everything that ‘young me’ wanted to be. The enemies were basically bumbling, alien idiots who allowed you to have a chuckle as you watched their amusing antics through your sniper scope, before pulling the trigger and causing even more amusing antics to ensue.Ĭrucially though, Kurt (I think his name was), your playable character, was simply just too cool for school. MDK was the coolest game at the time (for me, at least). “Wow! A game about sniping! And you start each mission by diving down through the air to your destination! This game is just too cool!”Īnd I was right. Seeing as you’ve already read the title of this segment, that article was clearly about MDK. Understanding my pain, my parents brought me lots of computer game magazines to read, and one article in particular caught my eye. Probably my fault for not understanding what the question, “Have you broken wind yet?” meant. A scared, little kid who was pulled away from the safety net of his computer and put into a situation where doctors had to put things in places he wasn’t yet comfortable with. I’ll even explain using case studies, which gives me an excuse for lots of nice, pretty screenshots. And I knooow, the developer isn’t actually mocking us, but hear me out and I’ll explain why this can be more detrimental than the developer/script writer may realise. This may sound obvious (Yet there’s still the fear that I’m the only soul in the world that feels this way), but the reason the main character in a video game should never EVER be the butt of jokes is simply that… We are them. It’s simply about thinking that the main character was the butt of all jokes. It’s not about misunderstanding the previous developer’s humour. This trick is often used when a ‘comedy’ title changes hands to a new developer. Yet, all too often, there is a certain comedy trick that is used which completely ruins my experience with a game. And some of my favorite games can safely have ‘comedy’ tagged on them.
